About This Site

This site was created as a placeholder for me (or others if they wish) to release 6v6 versions of the latest DotA maps. You can find the official releases at getdota.com.

I'll try my best to keep up with the latest DotA versions, but it does take some time to convert the maps. If it's taking longer than usual, I'll post a status update on what's going on.

Update: Interesting feedback of 6v6 DotA on comment 27, and my response on comment 28 of this post.

I tottaly Agree with you, the purpouse of making a 6v6 version is have fun with friends, not be playing league games, and most of all players just want it.

Unfortunately i don't have much time to spend on coding, but i hope you find a develop team so things can speed up, many people will interest on supporting 6v6 Dota.

Congrats!

I am Arkatakor who created that 6v6 thread in Dota-Allstars.com

First off - great work KillerBee! I bumped into this map accidentally on bnet. I have since been playing and hosting it – totally awesome.

I would like to apologize for the misleading information about the "switching a variable for 6v6" in my post. I was misled by Naz who is rightfully quoted by KillerBee in this page. Naz was one of the former admins and personal friend of IceFrog. He never took the opportunity to correct his statement when he posted in my thread on page 4:

http://forums.dota-allstars.com/index.php?showtopic=226853&st=60

I would also like to take this opportunity to offer my special thanks to flemeister and JohnBono for strongly supporting my thread, especially with their signature effort (signatures that linked to my thread). All this coordinated effort made it happen.

I hope IceFrog wakes up to the importance of this game mode. I tried to convey that to him and had a few email correspondences with him shortly after he closed my thread. He mentioned that he would look into 6v6 but I have not heard from him since.

I would like to take this opportunity to state that we still owe DotA to IceFrog and his efforts. KillerBee also recognizes this and it shows - he did not quote his name in the loading map, instead it continues to pay tribute to IceFrog by keeping his name in it. It is a shame though that players need to resort to cracking the map just to enjoy the game mode that they wish to play. In some ways I regret that it came to this. My thread explicitly stated that I wanted an OFFICIAL 6v6 map. Unfortunately IceFrog has not budged on this.

Thus I will conclude by quoting SyDemon, a friend of mine registered in dota-allstars.com who also supported my thread:

“The community wanted. The community did. The community got. That's it.”

Arkatakor.

Thanks for the comments everyone. That's the reason why I will continue to release 6v6 maps, players simply just want it.

You must not play much dota... the reason why its a 5 v 5 map is to force the responsibility of one "solo" where the solo player will be at a higher level and will be stronger therefor is able to lead the team.

You're amazing! I have been waiting for this forever! Wish Ice-Frog would budge on the issue...

Mr anonymous, if you played dota you would notice there's something called "jungle heroes" or various synonyms, which makes soloing a more exclusive, but definitely a more attractive strategy.

February 28, 2009 at 7:04 AM Anonymous said...

It almost makes me feel guilty playing this, because Icefrog didn't want the changes.

Still, you would think he would release an official 6v6. He must have known it would come to this.

6v6 is an amazing game mode, however. Maybe Ice will release an official one eventually, but until, keep up the good work.

Ps. Lol at anonymous who thinks he knows dota

@ouaklafoud:

In the latest version, the -rd gamemode should be working properly. No, I probably won't port the code to that map.

Even bad kids are better than total idiots.

Keep up the good work, GoD-Tony!

As a long time shaman of a long run dota clan, I'd like to say that you have done marvelous work.

You are really helping the community take the next step.

Perhaps when Icefrog realizes that the community plays WELL & RESPONSIBLY with your 6v6 maps, he will finally trust this community enough to decide for itself.

Lastly, can you post a **CHANGE LOG** so that when the time comes, your work can be acknowledged and properly incorporated?

Besides, obviously the more specific you make it the more helpful it will be. I realize as a fellow map maker that it will be a lot of work.

Perhaps once people see that work, spell out in front of them they will understand its importance.

"Even bad kids are better than total idiots."

Yeah well too bad he's not a total idiot then. The entire game is balanced around a 5v5 team. Yeah sure, 6v6 might be fun with friends, but the fact that the creator of this map doesn't even take time to understand the "splitting of communities"-statement, shows he's too ignorant to understand what he's doing. Not everyone's into what dota really is, and new players have no way of knowing what's real and what's not. The random custom map player will go with whatever, and if he stumples upon a 6v6 dota instead of 5v5 as first, he'll think that's dota - completely out of balance and just wrong, and base his opinion of dota upon that. The game is made for 5v5 and it should stay that way. 6v6 belongs at LANs only, and is to be kept as far away from the internet as possible.

"You are really helping the community take the next step."

“The community wanted. The community did. The community got. That's it.”

No, no, no. The community always thinks inside the box. It never acts professional, and therefore should not go "vigilante" like this. Let IceFrog continue his brilliant work, and stop this nonsense.

I don't understand what you mean by a changelog, can you go into detail a bit more on that? If you just mean the difference between 5v5 and 6v6, then in the end I try to keep it the exact same only with an extra player. I never change hero skills or attributes.

@Haakon:

Interesting comments, I'll try and reply the best I can here.

It seems like your biggest worry is that the extra players can make the game far too imbalanced with certain heroes, but when we're talking about public bnet games, I believe that skill plays a much larger factor into balancing a team than what heroes are chosen.

Take the example of a first time DotA player getting smashed in a public game. Do you really think that outcome is going to be any different in 5v5 or 6v6? Only a team of experienced league players are going to be able to take full advantage of an extra player on their team, and then adjust their hero choices to compensate.

I see games hosted that are 1v5, 2v2, 3v3, 4v4 etc. Don't these games also present the exact same problem you mentioned in your post? The reason people play these games that differ from the 5v5 league play is simply because of fun. Public games are played for fun.

Yes, a full team of 6 AOE heroes with excellent teamwork may be imbalanced compared to a team of 5, but we aren't talking about that type of gameplay here. 6v6, 1v5 or 3v3 will never be used for league games unless players want to accept that heroes may be imbalanced for those type of matchups.
